2024 Update

<![CDATA[My latest digital declutter ended back in March 31st of this year. I’ve resumed posting on my other blogs, but for a variety of reasons, I haven’t gone back to posting on this one. However, the past few days I’ve had this nagging feeling that I need to post an update on this blog. So, here's an update on why I haven't been publishing new posts and what I’ve been up to since my last post.

First off, what have I been doing since my last post?

Well as I noted in my Digital Declutter 2024 post, my focus was to read more books. And that’s what I have been doing.

During my digital declutter, I finished reading one book. That book was Outlive by Dr. Peter Attia. Great book if you’re interested in how to live longer, while maintaining a high quality of living.

A little after my digital declutter ended, I finished reading The Psychology of Money by Morgan Housel. Excellent book if you’re trying to understand how/why we make the decisions we do with our money.!--more--

At the moment, I’m currently reading a few other books:

C# 12 and .NET 8 - Modern Cross-Platform Development Fundamentals - Eighth Edition by Mark Price — this is work related and is just me trying to catch up with the latest in the .NET field.
Make Time by Jake Knapp and John Zeratsky — I never finished reading this, so I decided to read this again from the start.
Discipline Equals Freedom: Field Manual by Jocko Willink — I finished reading this already but am re-reading just because I want to. I’m also trying to build more discipline into other areas of my life, so I thought it would be the perfect book to read.
The Will of the Many by James Islington — high fantasy novel from the same author who wrote The Licanius Trilogy, of which I’m a fan of.
Word On Fire Bible Volume II: Acts, Letters and Revelations -- currently making my way through Acts of the Apostles book and surprised at how interesting the stories are.

hr class="sb"/

What have I been doing other than reading books? Well with the extra time from not having to write on here, I've been trying to finish video games (currently near the end of Final Fantasy XV), playing video games with the kids/family (Stardew Valley is a great local co-op family game), helping the kids get better at baseball, catching up to TV shows (Jack Reacher is pretty good), taking longer naps, and many more.

hr class="sb"/

So that's what I've been up to recently. Before I end this post, I also wanted to cover other things that I wrote about on this journal, namely Digital Gardens and my note-taking practice.

I'm still using Obsidian to take down notes. In fact it is still my primary note-taking app and that probably won't change for the foreseeable future.

I still have a Digital Garden, if having a collection of linked notes is what's considered one. But I don't subscribe to the idea of planting seeds or growing trees to grow my digital garden. If anything, what I used to call my Digital Garden, is now really just a personal knowledge base or a second brain. It is a repository of everything I've read and noted down, available for me to reference when I need to.

I also no longer follow the Zettelkasten way of taking down notes. I simply could not keep up. I do not have the mental bandwidth at night, nor do I have the time to go through my notes without burning out. That said, I've taken some practices that worked for me and simplified it.

I still do a daily log or what they call fleeting notes, and I still do a reference or literature note when reading a book. But I don't spend time processing notes the Zettelkasten way. I will link notes under a specific theme and leave it at that.

Taking a page from James Clear (author of Atomic Habits), my bare minimum requirement for my notes are, that they are in digital form and that they are searchable. And since I use Obsidian for note-taking, searching notes is easy. Storing notes in a text file with support for using Markdown is just icing on the cake.

---

So now we get to why I haven't been posting on here.

I mentioned above that I had a variety of reasons for not posting, but in this update I want to cover just one: I avoided writing on this blog because it was stressing me out.

Back in 2023-08-01, I ran into the Living a Simple and Quiet Christian Life video by Alex Wilson. Watching that video forced me to re-evaluate my online activities. It changed my perspective on blogging, especially blogging under your real name. Regarding this blog specifically, that same day I wrote this down on my bullet journal:

I don't want the fame and recognition. I mean yes, I want a little of it, but I don't want all of it. If I'm being honest with myself, I'm actually scared of the attention, the popularity, the fame. I think it is the source of stress on my websites/blogs where I don't hide behind a pseudonym or an anonymous persona.
Maybe it's time for Dino's Journal to come to an end.

This is not the first time that’s happened. I’ve always just pushed through after a short break. But I’m also aware of the fact that I keep running into this issue over and over. When I was going through my digital declutter, I was at peace, because I didn’t have to worry about what I’m writing on this blog. After my digital declutter ended, the thought of writing something for this specific blog/journal was stressing me out instead of bringing me relief.

And so that's why I haven't posting on here.

And this is why, on a number occasions before, during and after my digital declutter, I have contemplated bringing this blog/journal to a close. It’s not that I have ran out of things to share or write about. It’s just that, I felt so much peace not having to worry about something I wrote in this blog, or what I will write for this blog.

hr class="sb" /

So does this mean this blog/journal is coming to an end? Sort of. This will most likely be my last post on here. I'm not deleting this blog/journal, but I most likely won't be publishing new content either.

I'm also not planning to abandon Write.as. I still have a number of other blogs on this platform and I plan to keep posting to those for the foreseeable future.

They say people start writing to a journal when they're going through something important in their lives. I guess that journey for me has come to an end, this journal has served its purpose.

I appreciate everyone who've taken the time to read my posts on this journal. It has been a blast. Thanks for reading and peace be with you all!

Tags: #SiteUpdates #Reflection #Blogging #DigitalDeclutter #DigitalGarden #NoteTaking #Zettelkasten #TheEnd

div id="post-signature"
div class="alert-info"
ba href="https://remark.as/p/journal.dinobansigan.com/2024-update"Discuss.../a/b or leave me a comment below.
/div
/div]]>

<![CDATA[Yep, it's that time of the year again. Ash Wednesday is tomorrow, which signifies the start of Lent. And that means it's time for me to go through another Digital Declutter exercise.

And honestly, I really need one. I've recently fallen into the trap of reading comments on social media and it has not been good for my mental health. Yes, I know I should be using social media as a tool. But sometimes I cannot resist viewing a specific post and it goes downhill from there. So, yes I need a reset.

The main reason for this post though, apart from telling you that I'll be offline for a bit and not writing blog posts, is to invite anyone who reads this to give the Digital Declutter exercise a try. Take a break from living life online and start your own Digital Declutter.

You can follow this link for an explanation of what a Digital Declutter is, as well as what rules I'll be following for my own Digital Declutter.

Last year, I kinda went through a Digital Declutter without a specific focus in mind. For this year, I'm going to focus on reading more books.

Anyway, I hope you guys decide to give it a try. If you have any questions regarding this, you can find ways to contact me on this page, but sending an email is the best option.

Peace be with you and see y'all online on Easter Sunday.

Tags: #DigitalDeclutter #DigitalMinimalism #Lent

!--emailsub--

div id="post-signature"
div class="alert-info"
ba href="https://remark.as/p/journal.dinobansigan.com/digital-declutter-2024"Discuss.../a/b or leave me a comment below.
/div
/div]]>

Digital Declutter Rules 📝

<![CDATA[Version: 3.01
Last Updated: 2024-02-13

This is a list of rules that will guide me during my Digital Declutter phase.

Changelog:

The only change I've made for Version 3.01, is removing restrictions for Crunchy Roll when viewing something with my family, especially my kids who've shown an interest in anime.
The notable rule additions/changes I've made for Version 3.0 are removing restrictions when doing an activity with other people. For instance, playing video games and streaming videos are no longer restricted if I'm doing the activity with my family.

---

What is a Digital Declutter?

A Digital Declutter is an exercise I read about in Cal Newport's Digital Minimalism book. It's almost like a Digital Detox or a Digital Sabbath. The main differences are that you do it for at least 30 days, and that you are replacing addictive digital activities with analog activities. For instance, instead of browsing social media at night, you read books, or learn a new craft like cooking, or you learn how to play a musical instrument like the guitar, etc...

The easiest way to understand it is to look at the rules listed below.

But of course you don't have to follow the same rules I made for myself. You can create your own set of rules and do it at your own time. My main motivation for sharing these rules online, was to invite people to give the Digital Declutter exercise a try.
<![CDATA[It's that time of the year again. Ash Wednesday is tomorrow, which signifies the start of Lent. And that means it's time to go through another Digital Declutter phase. I would like to invite anyone who reads this to start their own Digital Declutter.

If you don't know what a Digital Declutter is, it is an exercise I read about in Cal Newport's Digital Minimalism book. I'm using the same rules from last year. The main highlights are that in addition to not using social media at all, there will be no blogging done as well.

Of course you don't have to follow the same rules I made for myself.
<![CDATA[This is a list of rules that I'm going to follow for the remainder of Lent. In hindsight I should have started this as soon as Lent started, but oh well. Better late than never.

These rules are based off v2.0. There's not much modifications from the previous rules I had. The biggest change in this set of rules, is that I'm not allowing myself to do any blogging whatsoever. I already feel anxious and excited about that one. It will be a good challenge.

And so without further ado, my Lent digital declutter starts now. You can find the rules below.

<![CDATA[There it is again. That feeling of dread. Or anxiety. That feeling of a burn out that doesn’t want to go away. Like there’s a hole in my chest that I can’t fill. I can’t quite describe it. It comes when I’m not distracted. When I’m alone with my thoughts. And it lingers unless I push it out of my mind with prayer.

I was fine during my digital declutter. But as soon as it ended, it came back slowly. Whenever I think about what to write next, I get overwhelmed. And I can’t explain it. I’m making my online activities a scapegoat here, but I have no other explanation for it.

There it is again.

Digital Declutter Rules v2.0

<![CDATA[Before we get to the new set of rules, here are some notes on the additions and changes I've made for this new version.

I'm allowing the use of Facebook Messenger

This is the main app that my friends and I use to communicate with each other. I don't see a need to cut myself off from my friends this time around.

I'm allowing the use of Safari and Feedly

One of my goals in this second digital declutter is to catch up on my readings of articles and blog posts. I have so many open tabs of articles and posts I want to read in Safari right now, it is not even funny. So, I'm allowing the use of Safari this time around to help me get through all those tabs. That also means catching up on my unread items in Feedly.

Not allowing Micro.blog and Sunlit apps

I signed up for a Micro.blog account just last month. Great service. I love what they are doing for blogging and personal websites. I use the official Micro.blog app and the accompanying Sunlit app on my phone. However, I will not be using those apps during this digital declutter to see what effect they have on me.

!--more--
I'm going to allow myself to continue writing Journal Entries

During my last digital declutter, I stopped publishing journal entries to this site. And because of that, I fell so far behind. I'm still months behind on my journal entries as of today. I don't want to fall behind even further, so I'll make an exception for writing those entries in these updated set of rules.

Allowing PC Games

Nowadays, I have to compete with Davin and Coney for time on the Xbox One. They both love playing Minecraft Dungeons. They even play together in co-op mode. Anyway, what that means is that some days I can't get to play video games at all. So, my compromise is to allow myself to play PC games when Davin or Coney is using the Xbox One.

hr /
This is a list of rules that I'm going to follow for my next 30-day digital declutter.
Findings from my Digital Declutter

<![CDATA[So my digital declutter phase ended today and I would like to share the results, but first, a slight recap:

I started my digital declutter phase a month ago.
These were the rules I followed. The rules were pretty much spot on because I don't remember having to modify them throughout the 30 day period.
The "digital declutter" is an exercise I read about in Cal Newport's Digital Minimalism book.
I bought the Digital Minimalism book to try and find more ways to curb my smartphone addiction. It is an attempt to regain control of my attention and time.

Okay so here are my notes, findings, revelations, thoughts, etc... on how it went:

I had so much extra time to read books during this phase; I finished reading 3 books and I wasn't even trying to finish books. Finishing 3 books in a 30 day period is amazing to me, I never thought I could do that. Here are the list of books I finished reading during the digital declutter phase:
   Digital Minimalism by Cal Newport
   Deep Work by Cal Newport
The Five People You Meet in Heaven by Mitch Albom!--more--
Aside from reading books, I also still had extra time to do something else. Cal Newport in his book suggests picking up some high quality analog leisure activities, so I decided to focus on playing the guitar.
I had time to read books to my 3 year old son. This was great because it took his eyes off his tablet. I also think it was a good activity for father and son bonding time. I used to get annoyed when he asked me to read a book, because I would have been doing something else, like playing video games or browsing the internet or writing a post on here. However during the digital declutter phase, I had ample enough time that it didn't bother me at all if he wanted me to read a book to him. In fact at times I was looking forward to it, because I've already reached my quota for playing video games, have already played the guitar and was generally just looking for something else to do.
My ability to concentrate has improved. During the start of this phase, I had trouble keeping my attention while reading a book. I would go a few paragraphs and then my mind would wander, like it was looking for a distraction. This significantly improved as days went by. Now I'm able to stay focused on a book for pages at a time. Based on what I learned from the Deep Work book, this should continue to get better.
I have found that I underestimated how much time it took for me to publish a post on here. Apparently I spend at least, at least 30-45 minutes to write posts on here. And I post almost daily. That's a good chunk of time in a week that I could have spent reading books that could improve my career or learning a new skill. The ban on writing posts on here during the digital declutter phase allowed me to realize that. This is not to say that writing posts on here is not worthy of my time, but it made me realize that I should scale back the amount of time I dedicated to writing posts on here.
While I did miss being able to write posts on here, I didn't miss it as much as I thought I would. I realized that my gaming blog for instance, cut into the time I had for reading books or ironically, playing video games.
Writing journal entries on a real notebook/journal is a superior experience to writing journal entries online. Even though I like to think that I'm writing for myself when I post on here, deep inside my mind still knows that this is the internet. Somebody could be reading my post and so I'm still writing defensively. In other words, I'm still writing as if I'm expecting somebody else to read my post. This feels like a restriction compared to writing offline journals.
With the ban on writing journal entries online, I switched to writing journal entries on my Bullet Journal. This made my Bullet Journal much more important in my day to day routine. All that writing lead to an improvement in my penmanship as well.
A realization I made while writing entries on my Bullet Journal, is that some of the stuff I wrote could have been, or would have been posted as social media statuses/posts. This leads me to believe that if people kept real journals, people would have less of a need for posting online. I mean like seriously, who really needs to know what I ate for breakfast? Or that I went for an afternoon walk? Writing it down on a journal scratches off the itch to post it online.
For the most part I was successful in keeping browsers off my phone. There were really only a few instances where I felt like I needed to enable Safari on my phone. Most email apps for instance, had built-in browsers so if I needed to take action on an email, I would still be able to do so.
I rarely ran out of battery on my phone. During the 30 day declutter phase, I never even had to charge my phone at work. Charging it in my car during my commute was good enough to keep it usable all day long.
The ban on entertainment and news websites made me more productive at work. This also took away the reasons I had for browsing the internet at night.
Decreasing my news consumption made me a happier person, or at least I think it did.
I have found that email is a perfectly usable method for communication. During this phase I sent a couple of emails to my friends and they actually replied!
I have confirmed that FB Messenger is actually an app I needed for keeping in touch with friends who don't live in the same continent. At one point during this phase, I had to reinstall the app to ask my friends a few questions that I needed quick answers to. Email would have taken too long to get a reply back.

There are probably a couple more notes and revelations that I missed, but I'll stop here.

I'll be making some changes to this online journal and my gaming blog based on what I've learned from this digital declutter phase. I'll talk about those in another post.

Anyway I've already spent more than an hour writing this so let's wrap this up. The most important thing that I learned from this exercise and from reading Cal Newport's books, is that our time is an important resource and we shouldn't just give it away to mindless distractions.

#DigitalMinimalism #DigitalDeclutter

div id="post-signature"
div class="alert-info"
ba href="https://remark.as/p/journal.dinobansigan.com/findings-from-my-digital-declutter"Discuss.../a/b or leave me a comment below.
/div
/div]]>
